Vallanadu Head works -Water supply schemes of Thoothukudi Corporation are:
The 1 st pipe line scheme was established in 1932. Under this scheme, purified water was supplied to Thoothukudi city from Vallanadu Water supply Head works which is situated 42 kms away from Thoothukudi city. The water was extracted from the Tamirabarani river bed and stored in 6 old Gallary well. This stored water was pumped by oil engine motor when the electricity facility was not available in that period. In 1944 electricity supply was given and thereafter the water was pumped by electric motor.
The 2 nd scheme was started in the year 2000. Under this scheme, 3 number Centrigugal motor pump capacity 170 horse power is installed to pump water capacity of 14000 lpm (Parallel pumping). This second scheme was necessitated to supply additional purified drinking water to meet Thoothukudi City’s requirement as per population increased. This scheme was funded by HUDCO.
This scheme was planned and executed in the year 2013. Under this scheme, 2 VHT motor pump of capacity of 150 horse power delivery 4500 lpm (one is kept by standby). This pipeline also implemented to meet the additional water requirement. This scheme was funded under O&M fund 2011-12. Under this scheme water is extracted from the Tamirabarani river bed from the village Agaram, Vallanadu by storing collector well. This water is pumped from this well.
The New 4 th Pipe Line Scheme is currently under operation since 2017. Under this scheme 4 number VHT motor of 600 horse power which delivery capacity is 30,000 lpm of each motor. Two motors are standby. The water supply for new scheme it from head work at Kalliyavoor which is 49 kims away from Thoothukudi. When the Thoothukudi municipality is upgraded to Corporation to meet the additional water to supply Thoothukudi Public. The water is stored in intake well in Maruthur Dam from Tamirabarani river bed. If pumped water its purified station installed in keelvallanadu after many processes like Areator, Flash mixer, Clarifucalator, Filter beds. Ferric Alum is added to further purification and at last chlorine gas is added for disinfection of water. This pured and health drinking water is supplied average of 60 MLD per day.
